In Lee Seung Yeon’s paintings, the boundary between the inside and outside of the body becomes difficult to define. The spine becomes an axis within the landscape, eyes bloom into flowers, and sensations rooted in the body extend into images of nature and the cosmos. Forms that might otherwise seem unrelated coexist naturally on the same canvas because, for Lee, the body is not simply physical, but a place where memory, sensation, and the world converge. Familiar symbols such as the dragon, moon jar, sun, and moon also take on new meanings as they intersect with personal experience.
Rather than explaining the changes taking place within her, Lee gives them color, texture, and movement. Thick layers of paint, freely flowing lines, and forms that repeat and expand create varying rhythms and densities across the canvas. Here, personal memories and sensations begin to move beyond the individual. What begins in the body spreads outward into nature and into a wider world, becoming another landscape through which we might encounter our own inner selves.
