Sonuro builds up oil pastel through the warmth and pressure of his hands, expanding color into a tactile language. Just as his name naturally evokes the Korean phrase “son-euro,” meaning “by hand,” the hand is always at the center of his practice. The layers of color, rubbed, overlapped, and pressed by his fingers, move beyond the surface of the subject to reveal the accumulated traces of time and emotion within. For the artist, the hand is not merely a part of the body, but an organ that records a person’s life with the greatest honesty; in his paintings, hands become a language of memory deeper than words.

In particular, memories of his mother form the deepest warmth in the artist’s work. A wrinkled face, clasped hands, flowers and light surrounding a sleeping body, and an empty yard where laundry sways in the wind all reveal traces of love that remain vivid even in absence. His works on war and remembrance also do not allow sacrifice to remain in the past, but call it forward as a memory and responsibility we must inherit today.
