Artist Suh Hui’s work begins with the life cycle of women. Across growth, menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, the female body is inscribed with social meanings—fragmented and recombined in the process. She likens these transformations to the movement of water: waves colliding and merging, capturing the dynamic rhythms of the body’s life cycle in painterly form. In her work, the body is reborn as both a biological entity and a symbol of liberation.
More recently, the artist has expanded her focus beyond the individual body to address social structures and desire. The hidden lives and deaths of animals in industrial farming, and the voyeuristic gaze that objectifies others in media, emerge on her canvases as unsettling and uncanny sensations. Rather than avoiding such discomfort, Suh Hui confronts it directly, prompting viewers to experience a reversal in which the observer becomes the spectacle.
Her work extends beyond a mere representation of bodily change, embedding it within broader social contexts. Body and desire, animality and humanity, the one who looks and the one who is seen intersect on her canvases, opening a field of new sensibilities. Within these uncomfortable and unfamiliar scenes, viewers are compelled to face realities they have long ignored, and through that unease, are led toward new moments of reflection.
