From a distance, Park Sohyun’s paintings appear as quiet horizons or waterside landscapes. Yet as one moves closer, the scene gradually dissolves into particles of light and layers of materiality. Surfaces built up with mother-of-pearl, mica, resin, and PVC do not simply depict the movement of water; rather, they create the sensation of light breaking apart and reflecting on its surface. The sea in her work is less a reproduction of an actual place than an afterimage of light and water that we come to hold somewhere in our memory.

Although the landscapes Park creates clearly begin from nature, they also carry a quiet desire to step away, even briefly, from the routines of urban life. The shimmering surfaces and layered materials function as an attempt to hold onto a disappearing moment, and as a device that recalls sensations we may have forgotten. Rather than presenting a specific location, Park Sohyun’s work invites viewers to remember the air and light of a waterside place held within their own memories, and the brief sense of calm they once felt there.
