Kim MJ carefully carries the auspicious symbolism of Minhwa, traditional Korean folk painting, into a contemporary context. Peonies symbolize wealth and prosperity, vases represent peace and harmony, and pomegranates embody fertility and good fortune. In her Munjado, peonies fill the character “福,” meaning good fortune, while her paintings of flowers and birds express wishes for happiness and peace. For Kim, these traditional motifs are more than decorative elements. They are a visual language through which people have long expressed their hopes for the well being and prosperity of others.

While remaining faithful to traditional motifs and their symbolism, Kim brings her own sense of composition and color to each work. Delicately rendered flowers, leaves, birds, and objects find a graceful balance within open space, while abundant peonies and vases bring both vibrancy and warmth to the composition. Through her work, the hopes for good fortune and peace once embedded in traditional paintings continue to resonate in the present.
