Gu Seul Hee’s work brings together the things she has observed and absorbed throughout her everyday life. Sunlit fields, dense grasses and trees, old alleyways and buildings, and city lights shimmering in the dark all become subjects for her paintings. Among them, nature remains her richest source of inspiration and energy. She is drawn to the colors and forms created by living things, translating the beauty she discovers in them onto the canvas.

Yet not everything in her work takes a visible form. When painting tangible subjects, Gu closely observes and renders what she sees, while feelings and emotions that cannot be given a definite shape are expressed through the abstract language of color and line. Moving naturally between representation and abstraction, her practice is ultimately grounded in a consistent way of engaging with the world: looking at her surroundings with affection and preserving the impressions they leave on her in her own visual language.
