Unlike the sunlit greenery we often associate with nature, Lee Dahae (Lee Puren)’s works unfold in nocturnal landscapes illuminated by the moon and stars. Under the bright moonlight, trees, mountains, and vividly colored houses reveal an even more vibrant sense of life against the darkness. The artist calls these scenes “Happy Village,” a wonderland of her own creation rather than a depiction of any specific place. Offering a momentary escape from everyday life, these harmonious landscapes of nature and village convey a sense of comfort, freedom, and optimism.
Working with powdered pigments on hanji, traditional Korean paper, Lee builds layers of color and carefully applies fragments of mother of pearl by hand, bringing a distinctive luminosity and texture to her work. The subtle qualities of traditional Korean painting blend with vivid colors, while the mother of pearl catches and reflects the light, giving the scenes a mysterious vitality. Existing somewhere between reality and imagination, “Happy Village” is both the artist’s vision of an ideal world and a space that invites viewers to reflect on their own sense of happiness.
