Jang Yujae’s work calls into question the common assumption that seeing is equivalent to proof of existence. Rather than representing images, he dismantles the very conditions through which images are formed—light, structure, measurement, and the systems of definition we collectively share—persistently examining how perception is constructed between the realms of the real and the actual. His early blurred landscapes introduced a subtle sense of discomfort that emerges when visual information becomes incomplete, revealing how heavily our understanding of objects depends on what is visibly confirmed. As his practice expanded into diagrammatic paintings and installations dealing with light, his focus shifted away from depicting subjects toward exposing the underlying structures through which visual reality itself is produced.
More recent works, including the Myunghwa series and projects that employ brand imagery, extend this inquiry from individual perception into the domain of social consensus. Signs such as names, logos, and color—elements that instantly generate meaning—rapidly construct what we recognize as “value,” while simultaneously obscuring where that value originates. By disrupting the mechanisms through which these symbols operate, the artist questions whether the value attached to national identity or luxury consumption reflects an essential reality, or merely an actuality formed within social structures. Rather than offering conclusions, his work leaves viewers with the experience of how easily definitions become fixed—and how easily they can be unsettled, revealing the inherent instability within what we accept as meaning.
