하루를 보내다보면 유독 어느 한순간이 기억에 남을 때가 있다. 특별한 일이 일어나지도 않았고 평범하기만 한 일상의 순간이지만 잊혀지지 않는 그런 순간. 최연재 작가는 이와 같은 순간 순간들을 붙들어 놓고 싶어 하는 듯 아주 꼼꼼히 애정을 담아 그림을 그려낸다.  
 평범한 순간들이 기억에 남는 이유는 아마 그 순간에 느껴지는 색과 공기, 바람, 그리고 언제인지 모를 과거를 떠오르게 하는 기억들일지도 모른다. 그 기억을 현재의 작품으로 이끌어와 다시금 재해석한 작가의 작품은 어딘가 모르게 연민의 마음이 느껴지는 듯 하다.

"오늘 새벽을 당신에게 보내 줄게요. 어이없는 문장인 줄은 알지만, 당신은 내 말의 의미를 알 수 있을 겁니다."

영국의 화가 '데이비드 호크니(David Hockney)'가 아이폰으로 새벽의 어스름을 그려 친구에게 이미지와 함께 메시지로 보낸 글이다.

누군가에게 내가 보고 느낀 새벽을 선물할 수 있다는 건 정말 멋진 일이다.

사람들은 기억과 함께 찰나의 순간을 포착한다.
그리고 그 사소한 인상적인 순간들은 각자에게 또 하나의 경험과 추억이 되어준다.

전에 들은 내 이야기같은 가사의 음악이 우연히 거닐던 길거리에서 흘러나올 때,
그리운 누군가의 향기가 엇갈려 지나가던 낯선 이에게서 풍겨올 때,
친구와 커피를 마시고 디저트를 먹으며 나누던 대화가 불현듯 데자뷰(déjà vu)로 느껴질 때,
화창한 주말 맑은 하늘 아래 기분 좋게 부서지던 햇살이 다른 날 또 다시 반복될 때,
우리는 그러한 장면들을 ‘과거’라는 단순히 흘러간 것으로만 두지 않고 크레이프 케이크의 켜켜이 쌓인 층처럼 차곡차곡 모아 혼자만의 상상력을 가미해가며 고유의 시선으로 시간과 공간을 바라볼 수 있게 된다.

나는 이렇게 내가 직접적 혹은 간접적으로 본 기억들을 주변의 일상적인 공간과 연결 짓고 재구성하여 비일상적인 한 편의 '이야기'를 그려낸다.

내 그림 속 공간을 바라보는 행위와 그 속에 들어가 공감, 교감의 과정을 거쳐 당신에게도 평범한 혹은 특별한 한 편의 인상적인 이야기가 찾아오기를.

< Artist Statement : Reconstitution for a recording of space in my memory>

“I’ll send you today’s dawn this afternoon, an absurd sentence I know, but you know what I mean.”

One day, British artist David Hockney drew a dark cloud of dawn on his iPhone and sent a message to a friend with images.

It's wonderful to be able to give someone the dawn I've seen and felt.

We capture a moment with our memories.
And those impressive moments are another experience and memory.

When I happen to hear the music of lyrics like my story while walking down the street,
when the scent of someone we miss is from strangers,
and when the clear sky and the pleasant sunshine are repeated on another day, we can gather them together like layers of a crepe cake and add each one's imagination to look at time and space with our own eyes.

I draw a 'story' that links and reconstructs the memories I saw with the world around me.

I hope my paintings, which may be ordinary or special to someone, will be an impressive story for you after a process of empathy and communication.
